BACOLOD City – An old man surrendered to the police for shooting his nephew in Barangay Amayco, Murcia, Negros Occidental.
The 78-year-old resident Isidro Salazar was accompanied by his relatives when he submitted himself to the Murcia police on Thursday.
Salazar’s relatives prodded him to surrender saying that hiding is not the “best solution,” especially that he is old.
Salazar shot the 45-year-old Jonathan Oparil (previously reported in this paper as Aparel) at around 5:15 p.m. on Nov. 2, a police report showed.
Oparil sustained a gunshot wound on the chest and was brought to the Murcia Infirmary Clinic where he was pronounced “dead on arrival.”
According to the Murcia police, Oparil was fixing a water pipe in his farm when Salazar opened fire at him.
Village official Emilio Colangco – who heard the gunshot – went to the area and was pointed the gun at by Salazar, added the police.
Salazar told the police that Oparil was also armed during their encounter.
Land conflict was the motive in the shooting, police said./PN
