MANILA – After debates pertaining to the length of his contract, PBA Draft No. 3 overall pick Raymar Jose finally agreed to sign an P8.5-million three-year maximum deal with Blackwater Elite.

A native of Pontevedra, Negros Occidental, Jose stood to receive a P150,000 monthly salary in his first year, P225,000 on his second year, and P337,500 on his third and final year.

Elite at first offered the former Far Eastern University Tamaraw just a one-year maximum deal – which led to a negotiation over the weekend.

“Happy and blessed ako,” said the 25-year-old. “Noong una talaga one year lang ang in-offer sa akin na kontrata and I am fortunate at nadagdagan ito ng two more years.”

When the offer was still a one-year contract, “ang nasabi ko lang na sana maging maayos ang lahat at maibigay nila iyong gusto kong kunin kasi pagta-trabahuhan ko naman e,” said Jose. “So naging OK naman (ang negotiation).”

NO ELITE SPOT FOR SUMIDO

Jose was one of the two rookies Blackwater signed, the other being second-round draftee Emil Renz Palma. Elite was also inclined to sign Kyle Neypes, who was selected by Phoenix Fuel Masters.

Meanwhile, Ilonggo Jhon Rey Sumido – the 43rd and last pick in the PBA Draft – failed to land a spot in Blackwater.

Elite did not give the Zarraga, Iloilo native a contract with the team already loaded in the shooting guard position.

Kasi iyong position na pupuntahan dapat ni (Sumido) puno na kami e,” said team manager Johnson Martinez. “We have many wing players kaya hindi na rin kami makadagdag ng player sa position na iyon.”/PN
