BACOLOD City – The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) raised the alert level in Mount Kanlaon from 1 (low level of unrest) to 2 (moderate level of unrest) around 9:45 a.m. yesterday.
Based on the Phivolcs bulletin, Mount Kanlaon may have “sudden and hazardous steam-driven or phreatic eruptions.”
“There is probable intrusion of magma at depth which may or may not lead to magmatic eruptions,” the bulletin further stated.
Local government units surrounding the volcano were told to impose a “no entry policy” within the four-kilometer radius permanent danger zone.
According to Phivolcs, though there has been “no visible degassing or steaming from the active vent this year, increased unrest could possibly develop into eruptions at the summit.”
Phivolcs’ seismic monitoring network recorded 279 deep volcanic earthquakes in Mount Kanlaon for the past 24 hours as of this writing.
The number of volcanic earthquakes detected per day in the area has been increasing since Aug. 18, Phivolcs said.
“Civil aviation authorities must advise pilots to avoid flying close to the volcano’s summit as ejecta from any sudden phreatic eruption can be hazardous to aircraft,” it added.
Phivolcs is closely monitoring the volcano’s activity. Any new development will be relayed to the public, it said.
Mount Kanlaon last erupted on June 18, 2016, which lasted for less than half an hour starting at around 9:19 a.m.
The volcano had spewed ash of about 1,312 feet to the sky.
The ash fall was experienced in barangays San Miguel, Gintubdan and Araal in La Carlota, Negros Occidental./PN
