BACOLOD City – The local government is considering cremation as possible remedy to the city’s overcrowded public cemetery.
Next week, Mayor Evelio Leonardia will meet with other local chief executives in the province who have considered cremation as alternative for burying the dead.
Leonardia, however, did not mention who they were.
Interments of cremated remains will “occupy only a small space,” according to Leonardia.
Earlier this month, the City Health Office (CHO) submitted a report to the city council after conducting a sanitary inspection at the North Public Cemetery along Burgos Street.
The CHO suggested that the cemetery be closed for rehabilitation as it can no longer cater to additional interments.
It also found that the cemetery does no longer meet the 25-meter and 50-meter distance limit from a dwelling house and source of water supply, respectively, according to Presidential Decree No. 856, or the Code on Sanitation of the Philippines.
Leonardia and City Administrator John Orola are considering the cemetery’s closure as an option.
Leonardia has earlier appealed to anyone willing to donate a lot for a new public cemetery in the city.
He said he is also looking for sources to fund a possible purchase of land for the same purpose.
