MANILA – Iloilo City’s Sen. Franklin Drilon is pushing the realignment of the P1.414-billion anti-illegal drugs budget to the housing needs of the police force.
The Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) is seeking the approval of its P170.7-billion budget for 2018 wherein P131.5 billion will go to the Philippine National Police (PNP).
“Since the PNP is no longer involved in the anti-illegal drug campaign, we will propose an amendment to realign approximately P1.4 billion of the budget for the antidrug campaign to increase the housing budget for PNP personnel,” said Drilon.
Last month, President Rodrigo Duterte ordered the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency to take over the administration’s war on drugs.
Of the proposed P1.414-billion budget, P900 million will be allocated to PNP’s Oplan Double Barrel; P500 million to the Masa-Masid program; and P14 million to the Anti-Illegal Drugs Information System.
“We will propose that a good part of this intelligence fund be channeled to the housing of the rank and file and uniformed personnel of the PNP instead,” Drilon said.
He added his proposal would help ease the PNP’s housing backlog of 10,300 housing units.
“Maawa naman po tayo sa ating kapulisan. Siguro naman ‘yung ibang pangangailangan, pwedeng matugunan doon sa ibang budget ng pamahalaan,” the Ilonggo senator said./PN
