MANILA – Despite sending a limited number of athletes in just five sports, Team Iloilo still managed to finish at fifth place at the close of the 2017 Batang Pinoy Visayas leg in Dumaguete City.
From being on the other half of the medal tally in the first few days of the week-long competition, Ilonggo athletes made their last push on Thursday in arnis to finish with 29 gold, 18 silver and 21 bronze medals.
Delivering gold medals in the final day were JM Capada, Ashley Jude Magcanam, Chederick Laurence Jamayo, Raymzel Reyes, Stifanny Golveo, Krzzan Gulac, and Jaevan Susal.
Finishing with silver medals were Mary Clarylyn Alviar, Shiela Mae Daria, Ram Cyrill Deloso and Marlon Gonzaludo Jr., while bronze medalists were John Lawrence Pelaez, Julie Leanne Tabares and Reyes.
Moises Salomon of Iloilo City Sports and Youth Development Office said the final standing of the Team Iloilo was already an achievement since they only sent 82 athletes and just participated in arnis, taekwondo, pencak silat, karatedo and chess.
“We consider this as already an achievement because, out of the 54 participating (local government units), Iloilo City made it to top five (in the final medal tally) even if we have limited athletes,” Salomon told Panay News.
Salomon added that all the Ilonggo athletes who have won a medal of any color in the tournament will advance to the Batang Pinoy National Finals, which will be held early next year.
Cebu City took home the overall championship with 46 gold, 57 silver and 66 bronze medals, followed by host Dumaguete (41-27-39), Cebu Province (36-37-43) and Bacolod (36-26-28)./PN
