KALIBO, Aklan – Mayor Ceciron Cawaling of Malay, Aklan opposed the provincial government’s proposal to make the northern end of Boracay Island a port zone.
The area – located in Sitio Bel-at, Barangay Yapak – was declared a forestland with tenured occupants or high-end tourist development zone under the local comprehensive land use plan in 2015, Cawaling stressed.
He added that the proposed developments in the area will cause “irreparable harm and damage” to the natural landscape of Sitio Bel-at and the adjacent Puka Beach, a popular attraction in the world-famous island.
Moreover, Cawaling said the local government of Malay has the exclusive right to sustain its municipal waters and coastal areas and develop them into ports.
The local government also has the right to regulate seashore activities, Cawaling said.
The Sangguniang Bayan (SB), meanwhile, wanted the town to “study and fast-track” the building of its own port in Boracay.
Councilor Jupiter Aelred Gallenero said the building Malay’s own port will ease the traffic in Cagban port in Barangay Yapak.
“It is high time for the local government of Malay to construct a wharf in Barangay Yapak,” he said.
Gallenero added that the planned construction is “not a competition” between the municipal government and the provincial government, since both are “only trying to make travel easier for our tourists, motorists and residents.”
Councilor Maylyn Aguirre-Graf said some private resorts in Boracay are planning to build their own ports in Barangay Yapak, which will be exclusive for their guests. (Aklan Forum Journal/PN)
