KALIBO, Aklan – Kalibo International Airport may soon have a longer runway, according to Gov. Florencio Miraflores.
The plan of the Department of Transportation (DOTr) is seen to allow the gateway to accommodate bigger aircrafts.
Currently the 2,500-meter runway caters to A-320 planes that carry 150 passengers each.
Once the runway is extended to 3,000 meters toward Barangay Pook, an existing two-lane paved provincial road will be diverted, Miraflores said.
Aside from the runway extension, DOTr also plans to build a new passenger terminal building, apron and taxiway, and other site development works.
Land acquisition and compensation of tenants and landowners were the major concerns that will face the runway project. Private lands in barangays Nalook, Pook, Caano, Mabilo, and Tigayon will be affected.
Miraflores said he and engineering consulting firm Schema Konsult, Rep. Carlito Marquez and Mayor William Lachica discussed the plan during an interagency consultative meeting with the DOTr and the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP).
The DOTr and the CAAP allocated around P20 million for a bigger passenger terminal building to cater to the increasing traffic of passengers bound for Boracay.
At least 10 chartered airlines were also interested in including routes from China and South Korea to Kalibo, Miraflores said. (With Aklan Forum Journal/PN)
