SAN JOSE, Antique – The Department of Environment and Natural Resources allocated P40 million for the rehabilitation and development of the historic Malandog River.
The fund will be used to dredge the silted body of water, remove fish traps and debris, and rehabilitate/improve the riverbanks, among other activities, said Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Officer Andres Untal.
“The project is very timely because Malandog will be the core of the Binirayan Festival reenactment,” said Sangguniang Panlalawigan member Errol Santillan, chairman of the tourism and environment committee.
The Binirayan Festival reenactment to be staged on Dec. 26 is the highlight of the monthlong celebration. It will depict the arrival on board sailboats and the first settlement of the Malay datus in Malandog.
Santillan, also the chairman of the Binirayan Festival reenactment, dredging the river will allow a big boat that will represent the balangay could dock at the riverside. Dredging will start on Dec. 1, he said.
“The big boat could be an international attraction,” said the Provincial Board member.
Untal said a task force that will oversee the river rehabilitation project must be created. Gov. Rhodora J. Cadiao was being eyed as task force chairwoman. (PNA)
