ILOILO City – Policemen in this city arrested 254 fugitives in 10 months this year, data from the Iloilo City Police Office (ICPO) showed.
Compared to the arrests made last year (same period, January to October), this year’s were 38.79 percent higher, according to Senior Inspector Shella Mae Sangrines, ICPO spokesperson.
City policemen apprehended 183 wanted persons in that period in 2016.
Sangrines said the ICPO became more focused in the campaign against fugitives this year, especially in October when President Rodrigo Duterte removed the antidrug drive from the Philippine National Police’s tasks.
Pleased with the number of arrested fugitives, ICPO director Senior Superintendent Henry Biñas urged his men to further improve the drive.
“We will go hard against wanted persons and other crimes. We need more police presence in the field to prevent crimes,” he said.
The ICPO recorded only 39 crime incidents from Nov. 10 to 16 of this year, a drop of 60.20 percent compared to the 98 incidents from Nov. 11 to 17 last year.
The decrease could be attributed to maximum police visibility in public areas, said ICPO operations chief Superintendent Jowel Saliba.
“Aside from our city director and regional director, Mayor Jose Espinosa III is also monitoring the weekly crime incidents. This helps us to further strengthen our peace and order situation because we identify which areas need improvement every week,” added Saliba.
ICPO is also implementing the curfew on minors, he said, and as a resul, this contributed to the decrease in incidents “because some minors are victims of these crimes.” (Iloilo City PIO/PN)
