ILOILO City – The Department of Agriculture (DA) encourages Western Visayans to be responsible consumers of rice, that is, avoid rice wastage.
To spread its message far and wide, DA is using social media creatively. It has come up with a contest called “#RICEponsiblePlateChallenge”.
Open until this Nov. 30, the first prize winner will receive P10,000; the second placer, P7,500; and the third placer, P5,000.
Here’s how to join:
* Prepare the healthiest and most balanced meal in a plate. Be creative.
* Take a photo of your meal with the right amount of rice, rice mix, brown rice, pigmented rice, or other sources of carbohydrates like corn, banana, camote, etc. Remember what’s good for your body.
* Post it publicly on your Facebook with the hashtag RICEponsiblePlateChallenge. Tag the Be RICEponsible Facebook account.
* Caption it with your age, sex, and a brief description of your meal.
Example: “#RICEponsiblePlateChallenge 25, Female, Steamed tilapia and vegetables with brown rice and papaya”
Only one entry per person will be accepted.
Winners will be announced on Dec. 18.
The criteria are as follows: nutritional quality (40 percent), food combination (30 percent, visual appeal (20 percent), and Facebook shares and likes (10 percent).
The healthiest and most appealing plates win the challenge, according to the DA.
The month of November is National Rice Awareness Month.
Some areas of Western Visayas experience rice shortage so the public is encouraged to appreciate the value of food on their plates, said Sheila Toreno, DA Region 6 information officer.
In 2016, DA had the “Brownriceforgood” social media challenge to encourage the consumption of brown rice, a healthful alternative to white rice.
Brown rice lowers the risk of one contracting diabetes, heart diseases and cancer, according to the DA./PN
