MANILA – Global FC faltered in the penalty shootout against Albirex Niigata FC to settle for second place in the 20th RHB Singapore Cup at the Jalan Besar Stadium in Singapore.
But despite falling short, the Cebu City-based football still tallied the Philippines’ best finish ever in the tournament, surpassing Ceres Negros FC that placed third last year.
With the scores tied a 2-2 after the regulation and extra period, Global managed to convert only one of the five penalty shots as against the three connected by Albirex Niigata.
Prior to that, Albirex Niigata opened the scoring in the Sunday match, with Tsubasa Sano hitting a strike in the 32nd minute. But Global managed to equalize the game before the half on a header by Wesley Dos Santos.
Albirex Niigata regained the upper hand in the opening half of the extra time with a close shot from Kento Nagasaki. Global countered anew with Paolo Salenga scoring from a cross by Hikaru Minegishi.
In the penalty shootout, Albirex Niigata was able to get conversions from Nagasaki, Shoichiro Sakamoto and Naofumi Tanaka out of five chances, while only Darryl Roberts was able to convert for Global; hence, the defeat.
Global became the first Philippine-based squad to reach the championship round of the RHB Singapore Cup after a 4-3 aggregate victory over Hougang United FC in the semifinals./PN
