MANILA – Philippine Azkals opened its campaign in the Chinese Taipei Football Association International Tournament with a 3-1 victory over Laos at the Taipei Municipal Stadium in Taiwan.
Phil Younghusband, Angel Guirado and Kintaro Miyagi fired a goal each for the 118th ranked Philippine team to gain the early lead with 3 points in the four-nation football tournament on Dec. 1.
Laos got a decent attempt early in the match but this was quickly deflected by the defense of Azkals. The Philippines gained the 1-0 lead in the 35th minute on a long shot by Younghusband.
The already undermanned Laos squad was further decimated before the second half with Chanthasili Sengvilay sustaining an injury. Azkals took advantage of this to raise the lead to 2-0 with a Guirado hit.
Azkals then surged to a 3-0 lead on a Miyagi conversion in the 89th minute.
Not wanting to go home empty-handed, Laos managed to score via a long-range shot from Kongmathilath Phitack.
Azkals will try to clinch its second victory when it battles host Taiwan at 7 p.m. today.
The Philippines will face East Timor for its final assignment on Dec. 5.
East Timor was supposed to open its campaign on Friday evening against Taiwan but their match was moved to Saturday evening due to the former’s delayed arrival from Bali, Indonesia./PN
