BACOLOD City – Former Negros Occidental governor and now provincial government consultant Rafael Coscolluela expressed concern over the decrease in the market price of sugar.
Coscolluela said sugarcane planters and producers are forced to cut down their cost of production to adopt with the impending crisis in the industry.
This means minimizing the use of fertilizers and reducing laborers, among others, according to Coscolluela.
If these measures continue to be taken, Coscolluela said the farmers will be the “worst affected.”
He added that the stabilization of the price of sugar will “not be anytime soon.”
This, he said, is caused by the legal and illegal importation of high fructose corn syrup, which local sugar industry groups have been maligning.
According to Coscolluela, the drop in the sugar price can also be attributed to the carryover stock from the 2016-2017 million season.
Some traders are still using their old stocks, which Coscolluella estimated to be good for three-to-four-month supply.
Moreover, Coscolluela said he is drafting a memorandum – to be submitted to Gov. Alfredo Marañon Jr. – that will present measures aimed at preventing the sugar crisis from worsening./PN
