XXIX. Last year
So, she went, partied, got drunk, got lost. She met a man, who shared the moon with her, and her life changed in just one night.
*
Last summer, Dulce found herself on Isla Pulang Pasayan.
She passed all her subjects, got pretty good grades, thought she deserved the break.
They took a green pump boat to Isla Pulang Pasayan.
Dulce and Liezel were seated next to each other.
Liezel was wearing a faux pregnant costume.
Dulce had a brown frilly dress.
*
As could be guessed from their costumes, the crowd of passengers were eager to attend the Bakunawa Festival.
They got off the boat first, welcomed by a very enthusiastic Bulak in a red shrimp costume.
The beach was crowded with people in all sorts of costumes, some with glow-in-the-dark sticks and bracelets, some transvestites in Las Vegas showgirl attire.
Dulce learned everything about the bakunawa story on her first night on the island.
She even saw John Lloyd Cruz and Lucky Manzano judging at the Miss Gay Beauty Pageant.
*
On the second night, she got drunk with her classmates.
Her first time, she said.
Then, on the third night, she was separated from Liezel and Bulak.
Lost them. Like keys, like contact lenses.
She tapped every other red shrimp or pregnant woman to see if they were her friends.
Tough luck!
She lost them. Like innocence.
*
The sounds, colors, smoke, movements of bodies were dizzying.
She walked away from the crowd, headed for the water, waded at the water’s edge.
That’s when she met Emilio. (To be continued)/PN
