BACOLOD City – About 5,000 Negrenses from different human rights groups joined yesterday’s commemoration of the 69th Universal Declaration of Human Rights Day to show their opposition against President Rodrigo Duterte’s “tyrannical rule.”
The demonstration was also to show that they are not afraid even after they were tagged as fronts of the Communist Party of the Philippines-New People’s Army, which Duterte also recently classified as a terrorist group.
The demonstration was led by militant and progressive groups from Negros Occidental under the Bagong Alyansang Makabayan.
Karapatan-Negros secretary-general Clarizza (not Clarissa as reported previously) Singson-Dagatan said the protesters came all the way from the far southern and northern areas of the province just to join the demonstration.
Protesters from southern Negros Occidental gathered on Lizares Street while those from northern Negros Occidental converged on the North Capitol Road.
The two groups then marched toward the public plaza.
Singson-Dagatan said yesterday’s commemoration of human rights around the world was “a timely date” to express their denunciation of Duterte’s bloody war on drugs that claimed over 13,000 lives.
She added that Duterte’s tyrannical rule “overshadowed Ferdinand Marcos’ rule as a dictator.”
According to Singson-Dagatan, the effigy of Duterte being a “rabid puppy” of United States President Donald Trump – which they brought with them during the rally – is the “best way” to describe the policies of the current administration.
With 20 members of local peasant organizations being allegedly killed by state agents, Singson-Dagatan said condemning Duterte is no longer enough. He needs to be ousted, she added./PN
