BACOLOD City – Hundreds of passengers and cargoes were stranded yesterday after the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) and the Negros Occidental Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Division (DRRMD) advised to cancel sea trips due to the onslaught of typhoon “Urduja.”
Lieutenant Senior Grade Jimmy Oliver Vingno, commander of the PCG in Negros Occidental, warned fisherfolk to refrain from sailing to the sea due to the Storm Signal No. 1 in the province.
PCG gave the same advice to roll-on, roll-off ships docked at the Bredco port in this capital city.
Ships docked in ports in Escalante and San Carlos cities also cancelled their trips.
Vingno said he and his men are ready for whatever situation may occur.
“We have speedboats in case of rescue emergencies,” said Vingno.
For his part, DRRMD head Zeaphard Gerhart Caelian warned Negrenses of possible flood.
Caelian has already advised residents living in flood-prone areas in the province to evacuate.
The DRRMD will be giving updates to the public from the automatic rain gauges placed in strategic places across the province.
As of this writing, the rain gauge in Calatrava recorded 8.5 millimeters of rainwater per hour while in Escalante, 11 millimeters of rainwater per hour.
Caelian said the rains may be until Monday or Tuesday./PN
