MANILA – President Rodrigo Duterte warned the courts against blocking the entry of a third major telecommunications player in the country in the first quarter of 2018.
Duterte does not want any temporary restraining order (TRO) or injunction against the company, Presidential Spokesman Harry Roque said.
“The President warned the courts against interfering in the entry of a third telecoms player,” Roque said. “He (Duterte) says that this is a matter of national interest for the benefit of the public.”
Duterte ordered the National Telecommunications Commission and the Department of Information and Communications Technology to fast-track the approval of application and licenses within seven days from submission, Roque said.
“This is being rushed because we desperately need better telecoms,” Roque said. “The scheme to be followed is China telecoms will team up with a consortium of Philippine companies, which will own 60 percent.”
“If it is not approved within seven days, it is deemed approved,” said the presidential spokesman. “That’s how serious the President is on the entry of a third telecoms player.”
Earlier Malacañang announced that Duterte offered China an opportunity to send in a third telecommunications carrier amid the problems on internet speed in the Philippines.
But the Chinese telecoms company would own only 40 percent while a consortium of Filipino companies would own the rest, the Palace said./PN
