TOP high school basketball prospect Ryan Calama-an backed out from an opportunity to play in Manila with National University Bullpups and returned to Santa Clarita International High School Primes in Iloilo City.
Primes head coach Rodel Camacho told Panay News the Leon, Iloilo native decided to go back home to toughen up further before returning to Manila after high school.
“I must admit sayang ang opportunity but siguro tama rin ang decision ni Ryan dahil mahirap nga namang sumabak sa Maynila kapag alam mong kulang pa ang laro mo,” Camacho said.
“For me, it is good news kasi he is one of our key players in the team, and I will also be happy to mold him further para pagdating sa college ready na siyang makipagsabayan,” he added.
Calama-an has no problems with the system of Bullpups head coach Goldwyn Monteverde but some “unavoidable circumstances” forced him to leave the team, Camacho said.
The Primes head coach’s elaboration was cryptic.
“Maybe, if he decides to go back to Manila, I will open our options” with regard to the school that will take Calama-an in, said Camacho.
“Ako naman I just want to make sure na magiging maayos iyong trato sa kanya ng school na kukuha sa kanya,” he said.
Calama-an drew the attention of Manila-based schools after lifting the Western Visayas basketball team to a second place finish in the Palarong Pambansa in April this year in San Jose, Antique.
Before accepting the offer from Bullpups, Calama-an also tried out and was offered a scholarship to play for De La Salle Greenhills Greenies in the NCAA Juniors.
Calama-an will be one of the key players of Primes when it faces Iloilo Doctors’ College in the finals of the Panay Sports Association – AsiaLink Interschool Basketball League 2017 today at the Veterans Gym in Iloilo City./PN
