ILOILO Doctors’ College (IDC) captured the Panay Sports Association – Asialink Interschool Basketball League 2017 championship after a 94-79 win over Santa Clarita International High School Primes at the Veterans Gym in Iloilo City.
Led by Jade Bryan Jardio, Marvelous Taghap, Christian Acero, Aeron Gozon, and Most Valuable Player awardee Kent Loui Quitayen, IDC took advantage of an undermanned Primes to clinch the win on Dec. 23.
From a tightly contested first half, IDC distanced from Primes in the third canto with inside and outside conversions from Jardio, Taghap, Acero, and Gozon.
Primes tried to make a run in the fourth quarter on hits by Ralph Bajon and Marvin Cuerbo but the IDC came up with responses from Jardio and Quitayen to build a lead as high as 15 points.
Santa Clarita played the finals without star forward Ryan Calama-an, who attended to a family matter, according to head coach Rodel Camacho.
“Ryan had to attend to an important family matter so he was not able to come,” Camacho said. But “we are not using that as an excuse. Doctors’ really played well.”
Impressed by the positive turnout, Asialink Financing Corp. was planning to hold the pocket basketball tournament every year, according to company officer Philip Doce Punzalan./PN
