KALIBO, Aklan – President Rodrigo Duterte has yet to confirm if he will be gracing the Ati-Atihan Festival next month in this capital town.
Mayor William Lachica said the arrival of the President will be confirmed a week before Ati-Atihan, which will kick off on Jan. 12 and end on Jan. 21.
Ati-Atihan, which is considered the “Mother of all Philippine Festivals,” is one of the most sought-after festivals in Western Visayas.
Senior Superintendent Lope Manlapaz, acting director of the Aklan Police Provincial Office (APPO), said his men will be on “full alert” for the possible arrival of the President.
Manlapaz added that his personnel will be implementing tighter security measures during the entire festival.
Uniformed personnel from the Police Regional Office 6 and the Philippine Army 12th Infantry Battalion will augment APPO personnel in securing Ati-Atihan.
There were two Philippine presidents who attended the festival before: Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo in 2007 and Ferdinand Marcos in 1975.
Lachica said senators Juan Miguel Zubiri and Sherwin Gatchalian, Environment secretary Roy Cimatu, and Rep. Joselito Atienza (Buhay Partylist) are also expected to grace the event. (Aklan Forum Journal/PN)
