CERES Negros was conferred the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Fair Play Award for its impressive showing during 2017 AFC Cup.
The 2017 Philippines Football League (PFL) champion bagged the AFC award for collecting the most Fair Play points during the AFC Cup, stated a letter sent to Ceres Negros marketing manager Ace Patrick Bright.
“This is a first for a Filipino club in an Asian competition,” Bright said.
Fair Play points “are awarded to a team for positive play, conduct on and off the field, and the behavior of supporters at the stadium, deducted [with] the number of red and yellow cards received in a match,” he added.
Ceres Negros reached all the way to the inter-zone semifinal round of the 2017 AFC Cup after suffering a 5-1 aggregate loss to Istiklol of Tajikistan in a two-leg matchup.
Prior to that, the Negros Occidental-based football club defeated Johor Darul Ta’zim of Malaysia in the zonal semifinals and Home United of Singapore in the zonal finals.
Ceres Negros will participate in the 2018 AFC Champions League after defeating Global Cebu 4-1 in the do-or-die finale of the 2017 PFL on Dec. 16, 2017 at the Panaad Park and Stadium in Bacolod City./PN
