FILIPINO-American boxer Nonito Donaire Jr. took time out from his busy training schedule to help turn over a hundred homes to typhoon victims in Lemery, Iloilo.
Donaire and wife Rachel arrived from Las Vegas upon the invitation of English philanthropist Greg Secker to turn over houses to typhoon “Yolanda” survivors in Barangay Capinahan as part of the latter’s Build a House, Build a Home project.
“It’s a personal mission to encourage athletes to make a difference with a social conscience,” Donaire said in an interview. “A friend hooked me up with Greg who invited us for the Iloilo turnover.”
“I’m looking at the bigger picture, what we can do to create more homes for the less fortunate, maybe 1,000 more homes, how we can make an impact on the lives of people,” he added.
The Friday activity was not the first time Donaire got involved in such projects. He has donated P1 million for housing projects for the victims of typhoon “Ondoy” in 2009.
“While still in the beginning of my career, I gave wholeheartedly as much as I could to build housing for Ondoy victims,” he said. “I’m doing it all over again. What a great way to start the year – by giving back, with the amazing efforts and coordination of Secker.”
“In boxing, fighters aren’t just fighters. We can do so much more beyond inspiring people with what we achieve in the ring,” he added.
Secker said their mission was to “enable people to reach their full potential, thereby transforming their lives and, ultimately, their community.”
“We focus on education, life skills and leadership initiatives, and we strive to equip communities with the essential tools for success,” he said./PN
