BACOLOD City – This capital city ranked second with the highest recorded number of foreign tourist arrivals in Western Visayas last year.
Bacolod, the home of the MassKara Festival, was next to Aklan’s world-famous Boracay Island in, according to the Department of Tourism (DOT) Region 6.
“The more tourists we have, the better for the city’s economy,” said Mayor Evelio Leonardia.
The city government is planning to revive this year the “A tourist is a friend” program to boost the local economy, Leonardia revealed on Friday.
Leonardia said this year, the city government will conduct a series of pro-tourism lectures among Bacolodnons.
“We would like our people to have that sense of pride and participation in helping us accommodate our tourists,” Leonardia added.
DOT records showed that Bacolod recorded 69,337 foreign arrivals in 2017 while Boracay, 898,914 foreign arrivals.
American tourists recorded 10,605 arrivals in Bacolod last year followed by their Korean counterparts with 8,273, Japanese with 5,976, Australians with 4, 393, Chinese with 3,949, and Russians with 3,671, DOT records further showed.
Tourists from United Kingdom recorded 2,174 arrivals while Canadians, 2,137, Indians, 2,010, and Germans, 1,883.
Records from the City Tourism Office showed that there were 692,513 domestic tourists in Bacolod from January to November last year, an almost 48-percent increase than in the same period in 2016. (PNA/PN)
