DESPITE losing and drawing its last two elimination-round matches, Ceres-University of St. La Salle advanced to the finals of the 2nd Sagay Men’s Open Championships in Sagay City, Negros Occidental.
It was facing off with Sagay North Negros, which snatched the other finals seat after a 3-0 victory over Negros Selection, as of press time.
Ceres-USLS was forced to a 4-4 draw by UAAP men’s football titlist Ateneo de Manila University in their elimination match on Tuesday at Sagay National High School.
The defending champion got conversions from Jo Warren Bedia, Charles Ivan Barberan and Kjay Gedor, while Ateneo drew two goals each from Javier Augustine Gayoso and Julian Vincent Roxas.
Hours later, Ceres-USLS suffered its first defeat in the tournament after a 1-2 upset by Villa Angela FC. JP Voltes Marikina mainstay Jaime Poderoso led Villa Angela with two goals while Gedor scored the lone goal for Ceres-USLS.
For Sagay North Negros, Gerard Paparon scored two goals while Reynolds Wayco added another in the eliminations.
Ateneo, which finished a runner-up last year, failed to make a return trip to the finals after a 1-2 defeat to University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos in their last elimination game.
Ateneo was also battling Villa Angela for the third place as of this writing./PN
