MANILA – Rain or Shine Elasto Painters got back on the winning track in the PBA Philippine Cup by defeating the struggling NLEX Road Warriors 97-86 on Friday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
Maverick Ahanmisi posted conference-high 20 points while Gabe Norwood, James Yap and Chris Tiu chipped in 13, 12 and 11, respectively, as Painters improved to a 3-3 record.
“We just want to push our tempo, have a good shooting and defense,” said Ahanmisi. “The coaches also want us to have a good communication on the floor.”
Painters opened the match with a 9-2 edge on hits from Ahanmisi. Road Warriors responded with a run to snatch the lead but Painters regained control of the game 25-20 on baskets from Mark Borboran and Eduardo Daquioag.
Rain or Shine continued its hot shooting in the second quarter for a 34-24 advantage. Road Warriors closed the gap 34-37 but back-to-back treys from Ahanmisi and Tiu followed by 6 straight points from Yap gave Painters a 53-38 halftime edge.
Painters’ lead swelled to its largest 59-38 early in the third with a conversion from Beau Belga and Borboran. Road Warriors clawed its way back to within 60-70 but Painters increase the advantage anew 73-60 on a trey from Rey Nambatac.
Road Warriors made its last run to come to within 10 points in the fourth but Painters countered with another rally from Tiu and Norwood to raise the lead back to 20 points 89-69.
JR Quinahan top-scored with 22 points while Alex Mallari and Ilonggo Kiefer Ravena added 17 and 14 points, respectively, to give Road Warriors (2-4) its fourth straight loss./PN
