ILOILO City – Barangay Baldoza in La Paz district is struggling to manage the garbage dumped along the coastal road in the village.
According to Barangay Captain Agustin Huesca, they have been dealing with this problem for a long time.
A mix of waste materials litters the side of the coastal road near a bridge in the barangay. The area has become a go-to place for scavengers out for items they may reuse or sell to junkshops.
Huesca said they have tried deploying personnel to arrest indiscriminate throwers and slap them with a P500 fine but these do not seem to deter those who find the area a convenient dumpsite.
“Amo na ang mabudlay sa aton nga mga pumuluyo,” Huesca lamented. “Bisan ano mo na nga [information] dissemination, laptahon pa gihapon ang basura.”
The barangay has also reached out to the city government’s General Services Office asking for dump trucks that could collect the garbage. But the dumping continued, Huesca said.
“Ang naga-agi nga mga vehicles nagapangakig kay ga-create sang traffic ang mga trucks nga nagakuha sang basura,” said the village chief.
Niel Ravena of the General Services Office said the responsibility of solid waste management rests on the barangays and the city is “just collecting residual waste.”
“Gabulig lang kami kon ang barangay kapitan daw indi ya na gid kaya i-clean up [ang iya barangay],” Ravena said.
Huesca blamed “transients” and people from other barangays for what he stressed as the uncontrollable waste dumping along the coastal road.
Ravena said his office has received similar information. “Kay ang location sang ila barangay daw sa boundary sang Loboc kag Baldoza, amo na ang coastal road.”
Huesca appealed to the locals not to indiscriminately throw their garbage as these may pose health risks. “Ako gapangabay gid nga…ihigot naton ang plastic ukon ang sako para indi maglalapta, indi nga pag-abot ninyo, ihaboy kag ibilin lang ang basura.”/PN
