NEGROS Occidental made true to its promise to reach Palarong Pambansa after ruling the secondary girls volleyball of the 2018 WVRAA Meet.

Negros completed a seven-game sweep in the tournament with a 25-12, 25-13, 25-15 straight-set triumph over Iloilo on Thursday at the Central Philippine University gym.

Veterans Shane Carmona, Marianne Sotomil, Joan Marie Monares, and Alyssa Bertolano were on the forefront of the Negros offense to barge into the Palaro for the second straight year – this time as Western Visayas representatives.

“It’s a dream come true for us,” Sotomil said. “Pinaghandaan talaga namin ito, especially ng mga college-bound players, because we want a taste of Palaro before we graduate.”

“It’s a total team effort,” added Monares, who previously represented Iloilo in the Palaro. “Ginawa namin ang best namin to win in each of our matches. Iba pa rin siyempre i-represent iyong Western Visayas sa Palaro.”

Negrenses surged to an early advantage in the opening set with conversions from Carmona and Bertolano. The Ilonggas tried to rally back but the Negrenses was quick to respond for a lopsided score.

It was almost the same story in the second set, with Negrenses surging to an 8-point lead. Iloilo threatened to get close 9-15 but Monares, Carmona and Bertolano pulled Negros to a 19-11 lead and never looked back.

With the championship already in sight, Negrenses opened the third frame with a 10-3 advantage on points by Bertolano and Kiesha Bedonia. The contest in straight sets with pristine conversions by Negros coupled and errors by Iloilo.

Also part of the Ian Macariola-mentored Negros team were Rhean Almendralejo, Joan Doguna, Nohlin Jundana, Marixi Maligmat, Jeanny Padilla, Shaira Jardio, and Erika Deloria./PN
