ILOILO City – A columnist of Panay News, who had been punched on the face by a barangay captain, yesterday expressed confidence that the management of Hotel del Rio would release to the police and media CCTV footage of the incident that rocked its coffee shop Wednesday morning.
“I will request Don Fonso to release it,” the newsman said on the phone, referring to hotel proprietor Alfonso Tan.
Herbert Vego, former editor of this paper who still writes a tri-weekly column, was sipping coffee when Sumakwel Nava (barangay head of Libertad, Lapuz) sneaked from behind and landed two blows on his face for no apparent reason.
Some of the scared hotel visitors scampered out of the coffee shop fearing for their lives as waiters pulled Nava away and prevented him from drawing what they thought was a gun in his waist.
The angry Nava shouted unprintable invectives while Vego shot back, “Ngaa gin-sumbag mo ako? Wala ako salâ sa imo (Why did you box me? I have done you no wrong).”
“Dakpa n’yo sia,” Vego asked the hotel security guard and the waiters who could have held Nava on citizen’s arrest.
But Nava and his bodyguard managed to move out.
Thereafter, Vego and the hotel management reported the incident to the police, which assisted him in filing a case for slight physical injuries before the Iloilo City Prosecutor’s Office.
Vego believed the attack had something to do with a column he had written and that the barangay captain’s son, Councilor Plaridel Nava, may have perceived it to be favorable to Cong. Jerry Treñas.
Councilor Nava, who is eligible to run for a higher elective post in 2019, had been critical of Treñas who recently indicated he may run for mayor and backtrack from a previous declaration to quit politics.
In his “People Powwow” column on March 6, Vego opined that the matter of running for whatever position is for the congressman, not others, to decide.
Yesterday he belied Councilor Plaridel Nava’s claim that he (Vego) had owed his father P20,000.
“Not a centavo,” Vego said. “I don’t even charge Mak for any writing job he wanted me to do for him.”/PN
