MANILA – Ateneo Lady Eagles exacted revenge on first-round tormentor Far Eastern University Lady Tamaraws with a 25-19, 25-21, 25-17 sweep in the UAAP Season 80 women’s volleyball at the San Juan Arena.
Jhoanna Maraguinot led the way with 15 hits while Kathine Tolentino scored all of her 11 points from spikes for Lady Eagles (5-3).
Learning lessons of its season-opening five-set loss to Lady Tamaraws, which peppered a tournament-best 20 service aces at the time, Lady Eagles held its foes to just three on Wednesday night.
“Maganda ang receives namin. Konti lang errors. Sobrang nag-pay off ang training namin,” said Lady Eagles team captain Maddie Madayag. “We are preparing for FEU talaga.”
Toni Rose Basas was the only Lady Tamaraws player to reach double digits in scoring with 10 markers. Negrense Bernadeth Pons was held to a season-low 5 points.
In the other match, libero Kath Arado shone as University of the East Lady Warriors toppled University of Santo Tomas Golden Tigresses 25-23, 18-25, 28-26, 26-24 for a second straight win.
Arado played the game of her life by collecting 28 digs and 32 excellent reception for Lady Warriors (2-6). Meanne Mendrez led the offense with 21 points while Ilongga Ma. Shaya Adorador had 15.
Lady Warriors erased Golden Tigresses’ 24-22 lead in the fourth with a double block courtesy of Roselle Baliton and Mendrez on Jinggay Bangad followed by Adorador’s crosscourt kill.
Golden Tigresses then committed two consecutive errors – a Bangad outside error followed by an over-receive – allowing Lady Warriors to escape with another upset victory./PN
