BORACAY – The inter-agency group tasked to restore this world-famous island is eyeing for a “new Boracay.”
The task force is composed of personnel from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, the Department of Interior and Local Government, the Department of Tourism, and the Department of Public Works and Highways, and other concerned agencies.
Tourism department assistant secretary Frederick Alegre said the task force will study an updated island master plan from urban planner Felino Palafox Jr.
The “new Boracay” under Palafox’s master plan will have features – bike lanes, pedestrian walkways, two-way streets, and expanded road networks, among others – with global standards.
“We have a world-class destination with inferior services. We have to demolish illegal structures along the streets. We have to take it out if within the limits,” Alegre said.
The task force is set to meet with Palafox this week.
“We asked Architect Palafox for an upgrade plan for a new Boracay. We already know the extent of the problem, it has to be resolved. We know what has to be done,” Alegre told CNN Philippines. (Aklan Forum Journal/PN)
