BORACAY – The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Region 6 are conducting a weeklong water sampling at Bulabog beach in this popular island destination.

Lieutenant Commander Ramil Palabrica, chief of PCG-Caticlan, said Wednesday they are coordinating with the DENR as part of the mandate to ensure environmental protection of the coastlines.

The Bulabog beach came under scrutiny after President Rodrigo Duterte saw a video showing algal bloom along its coast and called Boracay a “cesspool” in February.

“This is a weeklong activity. The water samples are being taken from the beach and the coastline of Bulabog,” Palabrica said.

DENR assistant regional director Livino Duran said the water samples will be submitted to the Environmental Management Bureau in Iloilo City.

The results will determine whether or not Bulabog beach is safe for swimming and other recreational activities. These will then be submitted to the President. (With PNA/PN)
