SAN JOSE, Antique – A historian challenged government workers in the province to deliver “true service” to the people.
Father Fortunato Abiera, president of the Antique Historical Council, made the call as the provincial government celebrated the 120th Philippine Independence Day in this capital town.
“Be true servant leaders and make your offices counters of the people,”Abiera said.
He added that the declaration of independence in the country was fiercely fought for until it was achieved.
“Work for the good of all. Advocate for children and the youth,” Abiera said.
He stressed that government leaders and employees must generously work for the people and make their services accessible, especially to the marginalized sector.
For her part, Gov. Rhodora Cadiao said Antiqueños must no longer fight for their freedom from oppression and colonization but freedom from poverty and ignorance.
She added that Antiqueños must unite to attain “a better life.”
Vice Gov. Edgar Denosta also said elected officials must think of the general welfare of the people over their personal interest to bring progress in their home province.
On Tuesday, a wreath-laying ceremony was conducted at the monument of Jose Rizal at the capitol ground.
Flower offerings were also placed at the statue of local hero and former Antique governor Evelio Javier. (With PNA/PN)
