MANILA – Just like the last time it hosted, Team Philippines emerged as overall champion in the 30th Southeast Asian Games which formally closed last night at the New Clark City in Capaz, Tarlac.
The national team capped off its campaign with record-setting 386 medals – 149 golds, 117 silvers and 120 bronzes – as the Filipino athletes went on with its medal haul until the final day of competition.
Filipino-American Eric Cray renewed his mastery in men’s 400 meter hurdles while Aries Toledo and Janry Ubas had a gold and bronze medal finishes in the men’s decathlon.
Guimarasnon Joida Gagnao nabbed a silver medal in women’s 3,000 meter steeplechase while William Morrison III and Mark Harry Diones had silvers in discus throw and triple jump, respectively.
Edgardo Alejan, Michael Del Prado, Frederick Ramirez, and Joyme Sequita nabbed the men’s 4×400 relay bronze, while Eloiza Luzon, Jessel Lumapas, Maureen Schrijvers, and Robyn Brown placed third in women’s 4×400 relay.
Brown also had a bronze in women’s 400 meter hurdles.
In kickboxing, Gina Iniong and Jean Claude Saclag had gold medals each while Karol Mangude had a bronze.
In jiu jitsu, Adrian Guggenheim and Annie Ramirez also delivered golds each. Luigi Ladera and April Eppinger had silvers and Peter Maimban netted a bronze.
Chezka Centeno and Rubilen Amit clinched the women’s nine ball doubles gold, while Jeffrey Roda finished with bronze.
In esports, Caviar Acampado netted gold, while Alexandre Lavarez and Andreij Albar settled for silver and bronze, respectively.
Jhonny Morte, Ronil Tubog, Alvin Lobregito, and Minalyn Foy Os finished with silver medals each in wrestling, while Carlos Carag of shooting and Debbie Mahinay of dance sport also had silvers each. Men’s beach handball ended with bronze.
Following Philippines in the medal tally were Vietnam (97-85-104), Thailand (92-103-122), Indonesia (72-83-111), Malaysia (55-58-71), Singapore (53-46-69), Myanmar (4-18-51), Cambodia (4-6-36), Brunei (2-5-6), Laos (1-5-27), and Timor Leste (0-1-5)./PN
