ILOILO City – For the first time since March, this southern city was not included in the list of provinces and highly-urbanized cities in Western Visayas with the most number of new coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) cases.
The Department of Health (DOH) Region 6 delivered this good news to Mayor Jerry Treñas, who welcomed the development but warned against complacency.
“I am humbled to receive a congratulatory message from DOH Region 6. But let us remain vigilant. The war isn’t over but we will overcome this together,” Treñas said.
On Monday, this city registered only five additional cases of COVID-19 infections, according to DOH-6
The province of Negros Occidental has the most number of new cases at 31.
Iloilo province came in next with 790 cases, followed by Aklan (20); Bacolod City (11); and Capiz (10).
Yesterday, local health authorities recorded zero new cases.
The city’s daily average COVID-19 positive cases also dropped dramatically to 13 in November from 53 last month.
Treñas attributed this downtrend to the joint efforts of the Iloilo City COVID Task Force, government agencies, private sector and the Ilonggos.
He, however, warned the public that letting down their guard could lead to a second wave.
“We will continue to pursue our goal to flatten the curve with the cooperation of every Ilonggos,” the mayor said.
To date, the metropolis recorded a total of 4,310 confirmed cases since the virus crept in late March. Of the total cases, 159 are active, 4,035 recovered and 116 died./PN
