Workers have gone on a nationwide strike as a call for the release of elected leader Aung San Suu Kyi and restoration of Myanmar’s democracy.
Thousands have gathered in Yangon and Mandalay on Monday morning while police deployed water cannons in Nay Pyi Taw.
Protesters include teachers, lawyers, bank officers and government workers. About a thousand teachers marched from a township in Yangon to Sule Pagoda in the heart of Myanmar’s main city.
Protests come after the military seized power in a coup claiming there was an election fraud.
The military also declared a year-long state of emergency and power has been handed over to commander-in-chief Min Aung Hlaing.(BBC)
