City’s least populous brgy has 51 residents

ILOILO City – With only 51 residents, Barangay Roxas Village here is the least populous barangay in Iloilo city and province, the May 2020 Census on Population and Housing of the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) showed.

But how come it only has few residents?

Village chief Melchor Conte said majority of their residents relocated. Sixty to 70 percent of the land area where most of the residents were informally settling was acquired by a firm. A mall was erected on the area.

Before the mall, the population of the barangay was around 1,300.

Conte said those who relocated are still voters of the barangay.

Bisan 51 lang kami pero damu kami botante,” said Conte.

Around 200 individuals were registered voters under Roxas Village.

According to Conte, most of their current residents are Filipino-Chinese businessmen whose commercial establishments also served as their residence.

The neighboring Barangay Osmeña came next with 90 residents.

In the province, Barangay Coyugan Norte in Leon town had the least population with 104, followed by Barangay Buenaflor Embarkadero (Pob.) in Dumangas with 103, and barangays Cadoldolan in Miag-ao and Crispin Salazar South (Pob.) in Janiuay with 113 each.
