BACOLOD City – A resolution passed by the city council urged Bacolodnons to observe an environment-friendly Christmas and New Year to help cut back on the impact of pollution.
The holiday season is the biggest season for retail and commercial activities, according to Councilor Em Ang, and such activities generate unnecessary trash, use precious resources, and create a large carbon footprint.
“We can each help cut back on the impact of pollution generated during the season by exchanging environmentally friendly Christmas gifts, using green Christmas trees, homemade decorations, and LED (light-emitting diode) Christmas lights to save energy,” the lady councilor said.
She encouraged the public to recycle wrapping paper, put gifts in reusable bags, and patronize the products of companies or organizations known to implement green practices.
Aside from keeping parties clean, Ang also said that the citizenry should segregate biodegradable, recyclable, and unusable wastes and hold activities promoting environmental causes such as tree planting.
“Amid the celebrations, Bacolodnons should be responsible in disposing of trash so as not to wreak havoc on our already degraded environment,” Ang stressed./PN
