ILOILO City – The City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) has reported a significant increase in heat-related illnesses, with over 100 cases recorded from March to April this year.
Dr. Johnilyn Gargaritano of the CDRRMO noted that nearly half of the daily emergencies they respond to are due to heat exposure.
According to Gargaritano, the CDRRMO recorded 47 cases in March and an increased tally of 62 in April, and they anticipate that these numbers may continue to rise.
The increase is particularly alarming as the public may not be fully aware of the risk, Gargaritano added.
Most cases have involved adult men aged 38 and older, who are particularly vulnerable due to their exposure to the sun following nocturnal activities, including drinking.
As a result, some individuals were advised for hospital admission, while others were sent home for recovery.
The CDRRMO has issued advisories urging the public to minimize outdoor activities unless necessary, seek shade, wear light-colored and breathable clothing, and stay hydrated by drinking water regularly.
Special precautions are recommended for senior citizens, who should be accompanied when outdoors.
Residents are encouraged to plan their outdoor activities to limit time spent in the heat and to ensure they are adequately prepared with water and protective clothing./PN
