ILOILO City – As Vice Mayor Jeffrey Ganzon temporarily assumes the role of acting mayor, the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) has appointed Councilor Sedfrey Cabaluna as the acting vice mayor.
This adjustment in the city’s leadership is necessary while Mayor Jerry Treñas continues to recover from a bile duct operation he underwent earlier in the month.
Before his recent resignation because he is running for senator, DILG secretary Benjamin Abalos issued the memorandum designating Cabaluna as the city’s acting mayor until Treñas returns from his medical leave.
The designations of Ganzon and Cabaluna ensure that the city’s governance remains stable and operational.
“You shall discharge the powers and perform the duties and functions of a vice mayor as mandated by law, except making or participating in any decision relative to DILG Memo Circular No. 2019-21,” read Abalos’ letter to Cabaluna.
In a statement issued yesterday through his spokesperson, Joy Fantilaga, Treñas assured the Ilonggos that he was doing well and on the path to his full recovery.
“I deeply appreciate the concern and prayers from everyone, especially as I work towards regaining my strength,” said Fantilagan, quoting Treñas.
If he has his way, Treñas said he would already be back at work.
“However, following my doctor’s advice, I need to take some time to fully recover before returning to my duties. Rest assured, I will be back very soon, ready to continue serving the people of our beloved city,” said Treñas.
Treñas has announced that he will no longer seek re-election, saying his decision to stand down was in the best interest of his Team Uswag and the city.
“I have always believed there is nothing we cannot do if we do it together. We can accomplish so much if we are united and think as one Ilonggo family for the good of our future generations. Padayon ako nga nagapa-ayo gikan sa bile duct operation,” added Treñas./PN
