CAPIZ – Several local government units (LGUs) in this province suspended face-to-face classes in all levels in both public and private schools yesterday, October 21, due to inclement weather brought by Tropical Depression (TD) “Kristine”.
These towns are the following: Panay, Sapian, Ivisan, Dumarao, Pontevedra, President Roxas, and Dumalag.
The Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office also advised residents to take precautionary measures against the impacts associated with TD Kristine which include flash floods and landslides.
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) yesterday said that TD Kristine entered the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR) early yesterday morning.
PAGASA forecast showed that Kristine would develop into a typhoon before landfall over Northern Luzon towards the weekend.
As of 11 a.m. yesterday, Kristine maintained its strength while moving west southwestward over the Philippine Sea. Its center was estimated based on all available data at 870 kilometers east of Eastern Visayas.
It has a maximum wind speed of 55 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center with gustiness of up to 70 kph.
“Kristine is forecast to intensify into a tropical storm in the next 12 hours,” PAGASA said. “It may reach severe tropical storm category by tomorrow (Tuesday) afternoon or evening and typhoon category by Thursday (October 24) afternoon or evening, prior to landfall over the northeastern portion of Cagayan.”
Placed under Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. were Catanduanes, Masbate, Camarines Sur, Albay, Sorsogon, Camarines Norte and the eastern portion of Quezon in Luzon and Eastern and Northern Samar, Samar, Leyte, Biliran, and Southern Leyte in Visayas, and Dinagat Island and Surigao del Norte in Mindanao./PN
