Zubiri expresses discontent with Senate leadership

BACOLOD City – “I’m not satisfied with the leadership in the Senate,” Sen. Juan Miguel Zubiri declared during a media interview yesterday, July 1, in Kabankalan City, Negros Occidental.

Zubiri, who attended the groundbreaking ceremony for the Phase 2 project of the Kabankalan City Water District in Barangay 1, revealed his openness to support other candidates for the Senate presidency, expressing hope and prayer that the chamber will soon experience a change in leadership.

He shared that he is part of a group informally known as the “veteran bloc,” composed of senators Loren Legarda, Vicente Sotto III, Panfilo Lacson, and himself — all of whom previously supported Sotto’s leadership.

Zubiri recalled the Senate’s productive years under Sotto, whom he described as a reliable and present leader.

“During Sen. Sotto’s four and a half years of leadership, I served as the majority floor leader. We passed many significant pieces of legislation, even amid the pandemic, and Sotto was never absent,” he said.

He underscored his preference for a Senate president who will uphold the institution’s integrity and traditions. “I’m for a leader who will keep protecting the integrity and the tradition of the Senate. I don’t want a dictator-type leader,” he asserted.

“I don’t want the Senate to become like other chambers where a single ‘emperor’ dictates everything to its members,” Zubiri added, making veiled criticism of centralized leadership styles.

He also addressed circulating reports that Senate President Francis “Chiz” Escudero already has the support of 13 senators.

“He may have 13 signatures, but I still hope and pray that, in the end, we will choose a Senate president who will preserve the Senate’s independence,” he said.

Meanwhile, Zubiri extended support to the Kabankalan City Water District, citing his personal connection to the city.

“My father is from Barangay Talubangi, Kabankalan. That’s why I’ve always been committed to helping the city improve its water services,” he said.

He emphasized the importance of addressing water issues, noting that the high cost of water — even more expensive than electricity in some areas —has discouraged some investors from staying.

With the assistance of the national government, Zubiri said, the local water district will now be able to upgrade its water system, improving access and efficiency for residents and businesses alike./PN
