NEARLY three decades after its release, Sony Pictures has officially greenlit a sequel to the 1997 romantic comedy “My Best Friend’s Wedding,” starring Julia Roberts, Cameron Diaz, Dermot Mulroney and Rupert Everett.
The studio confirmed the project to the media, as it shared that acclaimed writer-director Celine Song was tapped to write the screenplay. No director has been attached to the project, and representatives say the sequel remains in early development.
Song’s “Past Lives,” starring Greta Lee and Teo Yoo, and “Materialists,” starring Chris Evans, Dakota Johnson, and Pedro Pascal, both received critical acclaim upon their release and performed well at the box office.
The news came after Mulroney, who portrayed Michael, recently revealed that “there is talk of a sequel,” stating that “lawyers were talking,” though he emphasized he had no definitive information on casting or the script’s status.
In a 2023 interview on “Watch What Happens Live,” Roberts expressed interest in revisiting her role as Julianne Potter, saying, that she wants “to see what they’re doing and how Kimmy and Michael’s marriage is going.”
“My Best Friend’s Wedding” follows food critic Julianne (Roberts) as she attempts to sabotage her best friend Michael’s wedding to Kimmy (Diaz) after she realizes her love for him just days before the ceremony.
The film was a box office success after it amassed about $300 million worldwide against a budget of roughly $38 million. It also received three Golden Globe nominations: Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, Best Actress (Roberts), and Best Supporting Actor (Rupert Everett).
