CAPIZ — A wreath-laying ceremony was held to commemorate the 78th death anniversary of former President Manuel A. Roxas at his monument in Roxas City on April 15.
The event served as both a formal tribute and a moment of reflection on the life and legacy of the country’s first president of the independent Republic of the Philippines.
Roxas, who was born in Capiz on January 1, 1892, played a crucial role in shaping the nation’s post-colonial identity. He assumed office in 1946, shortly after the Philippines gained independence from the United States.
His presidency focused on rebuilding a nation devastated by World War II, prioritizing economic recovery, national reconstruction, and the strengthening of democratic institutions. He passed away on April 15, 1948.
The ceremony was marked by solemnity, honoring Roxas’ enduring contributions to nation-building.
Gov. Fredenil H. Castro emphasized the importance of remembering the former president’s legacy, noting that his values of integrity, perseverance, and dedication to public service remain relevant today.
The commemoration also aimed to inspire current and future leaders to embody these principles in governance.
Among those in attendance were Vice Gov. James Magbanua, members of the Provincial Board, and Capiz 2nd District Representative Jane Castro.
Local officials, led by Roxas City Mayor Ronnie T. Dadivas, also joined the ceremony, along with mayors from neighboring municipalities.
Representatives from civic organizations, including the Gerry Roxas Foundation, participated in the event, continuing the former president’s advocacy for community service and development.
Law enforcement personnel were likewise present, highlighting collaboration between authorities and local leaders in promoting peace and order.
Also in attendance was Paolo Gerardo Roxas, great-grandson of the late president, who shared reflections on his ancestor’s lasting influence on Filipino society.
