MANILA — Vice President Sara Duterte-Carpio commended the Philippine Army’s 79th Infantry Battalion (79IB) for what she described as a “successful combat operation,” citing the unit’s role in maintaining peace and security.
While Duterte-Carpio did not specify the operation, the Philippine Army earlier reported an encounter involving the 79IB and alleged members of the New People’s Army (NPA) in Barangay Salamanca, Toboso, Negros Occidental.
“On behalf of the Office of the Vice President, I extend my commendation to the brave men and women of the 79th Infantry Battalion (79IB) of the Philippine Army under Lt. Col. Eric Alfonso for your recent successful combat operation,” Duterte-Carpio said in a statement.
“Your courage, discipline, and unwavering commitment to safeguarding our communities are worthy of the highest respect. This achievement reflects not only your operational excellence but also your dedication to upholding peace, security, and the rule of law,” she added.
The military said 19 suspected NPA members were killed in the Negros clash.
However, reports also indicated that among those killed were individuals identified as a University of the Philippines student leader, a Bacolod-based journalist, a farmer, and a US citizen of Filipino descent.
The Philippine Army has denied claims that civilians were among the fatalities, maintaining that its troops acted professionally and in accordance with International Humanitarian Law.
In her statement, Duterte-Carpio also called on families to help prevent youth from being recruited into armed groups.
“We also call on parents and guardians to remain vigilant in guiding and monitoring the activities of their children, ensuring they are protected from harmful influences and prevented from being drawn into violent extremist groups,” she said.
