ILOILO — Burglars carted away around P200,000 worth of cash and jewelry after ransacking a pawnshop in Barangay Poblacion, Calinog town.
Authorities said the incident was discovered yesterday morning by an employee of C. Bayate Pawnshop as she arrived for her shift.
The 36-year-old teller identified by the alias “Elna” told the police that she was greeted by a scene of disarray with items scattered inside the store. Upon checking the storage area, she discovered that the vault and display cases had been emptied.
According to Police Major Myles Dieron, chief of the Calinog Municipal Police Station, the suspects made off with P100,000 in cash and assorted jewelry estimated to be worth another P100,000.
Authorities believe the burglars gained entry and escaped through a drainage pipe or culvert located directly beneath the establishment.
As of press time, police were still investigating the incident to identify the suspects and determine if the establishment’s closed-circuit television camera captured the break-in./PN
