MANILA – President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Tuesday directed the Department of Education (DepEd) to ensure all schools are fully prepared for the opening of School Year 2026-2027 on June 8, emphasizing that students’ learning must continue without disruption as millions of learners return to classrooms nationwide.
Speaking during the National Capital Region Brigada Eskwela Kick-Off 2026 at Kapitbahayan Elementary School in Navotas City, Marcos stressed the need for schools to be ready for the resumption of classes, particularly as the southwest monsoon season begins to affect parts of the country.
The President said DepEd is capable of carrying out its responsibilities but underscored the importance of preparedness to prevent interruptions in education.
“DepEd knows perfectly well what to do. Hindi na natin sila kailangan sila turuan (we don’t have to teach them)… We’re just improving the facilities,” Marcos said.
He added that ensuring a smooth and uninterrupted opening of classes remains a priority.
“Kung may instruction man ako, tiyakin nila na handa sila sa pagbukas ng eskwela, ng klase para naman hindi nabibitin ang mga bata. Tuloy tuloy ang kanilang pag-aaral,” he said.
Marcos attended the Brigada Eskwela launch in Navotas City, joining school officials, teachers, parents, and volunteers in preparations for the new academic year.
The nationwide Brigada Eskwela program, which runs from June 1 to 5, is aimed at readying public schools for the return of students through maintenance, repair, and safety enhancement activities.
During the event, the President inspected ongoing improvement works at Kapitbahayan Elementary School and took part in literacy activities with Grade 1 pupils, including reading a Jose Rizal adaptation of a Filipino fable.
DepEd expects millions of learners across the country to report to their classrooms when School Year 2026-2027 officially opens on June 8, with schools now completing final preparations to ensure a safe and orderly start to classes./PN
