MANILA — Alexandra Eala’s inspiring giant-killing run at the 2026 Berlin Open came to an end in the semifinals after the Filipino tennis sensation fell to Czech standout Linda Noskova, 6-2, 6-4, on Saturday (Sunday in the Philippines) at the Steffi Graf Stadion.
Despite the defeat, Eala completed one of the biggest campaigns of her young professional career, reaching the last four of the prestigious grass-court tournament after eliminating world No. 2 Elena Rybakina and former world No. 3 Elina Svitolina in consecutive rounds.
Noskova advanced to the championship match against Jessica Pegula after a clinical performance in a contest delayed for several hours by heavy rain.
The Czech player seized control from the outset, breaking Eala in the opening game and dictating play throughout the first set. Another service break allowed Noskova to comfortably take the opener, 6-2, while her powerful serve consistently troubled the Filipina. She finished the match with eight aces.
Eala mounted a stronger challenge in the second set and matched Noskova through the opening eight games. However, the Czech secured a crucial break of serve at 4-4 to move ahead, 5-4, before calmly serving out the match to complete the straight-sets victory.
The loss halted a remarkable week for the world No. 35-ranked Filipina wildcard, who produced some of the tournament’s biggest upsets.
Eala defeated world No. 2 Elena Rybakina in the Round of 16 before eliminating former world No. 3 Elina Svitolina in the quarterfinals to book her place in the semifinals.
Noskova’s dominance on serve proved decisive. The Czech won 27 of her 33 first-serve points for an 81.8-percent success rate, while Eala captured 13 of 25 first-serve points, or 52 percent.
Although she fell short of reaching the final, Eala’s semifinal finish further strengthened her growing reputation on the WTA Tour and provided a major confidence boost heading into the season’s upcoming grass-court events./PN
