SEPTEMBER 10, 2026 marks the eighth death anniversary of Daniel “Danny” Gumban Fajardo, the visionary publisher, veteran journalist, and iconic media leader who co-founded Panay News alongside her wife, Maria Santillan Fajardo. Known for his fiery commentaries, steadfast advocacy for press freedom, and unwavering public service, Sir Danny left a legacy that continues to shape regional journalism.
As we honor his life, memory, and enduring influence on his eighth memorial anniversary, here are eight remarkable facts about the founding father of Western Visayas’ biggest daily newspaper:
1. Multi-term president of the Iloilo Press Club
Recognized for his decisive leadership by his peers, Fajardo served multiple terms as president of the Iloilo Press Club — the oldest press club in the Philippines.
He also served as executive vice president of the Publishers Association of the Philippines, Inc. (PAPI), advocating for regional media welfare nationwide. Moreover, he was a member of the National Press Club of the Philippines and the Manila Overseas Press Club.
2. First international travel
Australia was the first country Fajardo visited for international travel. He was part of the official media delegation that accompanied former President Fidel V. Ramos during his visit to Australia from August 18 to 23, 1995.
3. Visited over 10 countries
Despite his demanding schedule, Fajardo was fortunate to visit more than 10 countries for both business and leisure. His travels took him to Australia, Thailand, Brazil, Cambodia, Indonesia, Singapore, Japan, USA, Ireland, New Zealand, and Qatar.
