The iconic trio of Rancho, Farhan, and Raju are coming back.
More than a decade after they captured audiences with their unforgettable friendship and brave take on education, the beloved trio will be heading back to the big screen.
The sequel for the 2009 Bollywood hit comedy film “3 Idiots” is officially in the works, with director Rajkumar Hirani confirming that the story and script is currently being developed.
As reported by The Times of India and Esquire India, Rajkumar revealed that the team has already laid the groundwork for the sequel, with the story expected to pick up two decades after the events of the original film.
“Aamir [Khan] had read a very early draft; the overall idea is there. I don’t know… he must have been doing some media interviews [and spoken about it]. But we are still in the process of writing because we are also very excited about it,” he said.
And since fans have been asking whether there will be an addition to the trio, the director clarified: “Honestly, there’s no 4th idiot, it’s 3 Idiots only, it’s 20 years later [from where we ended].”
If the project moves forward, Aamir Khan, R Madhavan, and Sharman Joshi are expected to reprise their roles as Rancho, Farhan, and Raju, respectively.
Despite the anticipation surrounding the sequel, Rajkumar stressed that the team is not rushing the project.
Released in 2009, “3 Idiots” follows the story of three engineering students whose friendship grew stronger as they navigate the intense academic pressure surrounding them.
Rancho, Farhan, and Raju challenged an education system heavily focused on grades and competition while discovering that success could not simply be measured by exam results and pre-determined destinies.
The film became a major success not only in India but also internationally, resonating with audiences through its mix of comedy, friendship, ambition, and its commentary on the pressures faced by students.
Its memorable characters and story also helped introduce the film to a wider global audience, while its soundtrack produced songs that became fan favorites, including “All Is Well.”
“3 Idiots” won 16 of its 27 nominations, including Best Film and Best Director, at the International Indian Film Awards in 2010. It is often called the Bollywood Oscars.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film also became an international box-office success, earning $51 million from domestic and international markets within its first 10 days of release. (Push Team)
